Material Preparation

Important Information
Proper preparation of your quilt top and quilt back is essential in order to ensure good results, so please read the following instructions carefully!

Charges will be applied to any preparations that you request of me (e.g. piecing back panels, pressing seams, etc.).

General
The three layers of your quilt will be loaded on the machine independently of one another. Please do not pin or baste them together.

The batting and backing should measure at least six inches longer and six inches wider than your quilt top. For example, if your quilt measures 60″ x 80″, the batting and backing should measure at least 66″ x 86″.

Quilt Top
Press seams well. Be sure the top lies flat. Ripples and “puffy” places will not quilt flat.

Clip all loose threads on quilt top and be sure the seams have been pressed.

Make sure the quilt is squared. Two things will help you accomplish this: one is to square blocks as you go. The other is to apply the borders by taking several measurements through the middle, average these measurements and cut borders to length. Pin border to the quilt by matching centers, ends and quarters. Ease quilt into borders. For additional information please download our leaflet Backing & Borders – Preparing for Machine Quilting.

Use a safety pin to mark the top of the quilt and top of the backing if you have a preference. This will eliminate any possibility of your quilt top and backing being put together with the wrong edge.

Do not add embellishments until after it is quilted.

Batting & Backing
Batting and backing (if provided by you) must be at least 6 inches longer and wider than the quilt top (3 inches on each side).

Please trim off the selvage edges before seaming your backing. Sides should be straight, and the backing squared. Bed sheets are usually not suitable because of their high thread count.

If backing needs to be pieced, cut off the selvages, sew the pieces together with a 1/2 inch seam and pressed open. Make sure the backing is squared up and pressed. I will do touch up pressing but if I have to press out heavy wrinkles, there will be an extra charge.

Binding
Please send one yard of fabric if you would like me to cut and apply binding. I will cut 3 inch straight grain binding, apply by machine to the front, turn, and hand stitch on the back. There will be an extra charge for this service.

Deposit
A 50% deposit is required to begin work on your quilt. You may either include a check or money order (payable to Diane Tomaszewski) in your shipment.
